Working towards a greener NHS estate

The NHS is responsible of over 5% of the UK’s carbon footprint, and has fallen behind other sectors when it comes to response and reducing environmental impact. Across the estate, there are a number of key areas to tackle including energy consumption, single-use plastic, water usage, fuel and waste.

Hear the debate around the scale of the challenges at hand and learn about some “quick wins” and initiatives implemented within the NHS to reduce their negative environmental impact, that you can look to take on board yourself, to drive towards a greener NHS.

Delivering the NHS’s first ever green health building

NHS England has just given the go ahead for one of the most energy efficient buildings in the NHS, Foleshill Primary Health Centre in Coventry. It will be the greenest building of its type in the UK and will be certified to the Passivhaus standard.

Community Health Partnerships (CHP) and Coventry and Rugby CCG are jointly delivering the project and you can hear from them about the health and environmental benefits of the approach, its modular off-site construction and how it will improve facilities for patients and clinicians while reducing emissions and costs, freeing up more money for healthcare.

With a rapid increase in virtual consultations and digital interfacing in the current environment, the focus on reducing travel associated with hospital and GP appointment attendance and home visits is stronger than ever.

5% of road traffic in England is attributed to NHS-related travel, which is responsible for 13% of the NHS carbon footprint. Hear about the impact of pathway adherence and digital patient support on the carbon footprint, with transferable ideas to implement across your system.
